Daintree Cruises - Dan Irby’s Mangrove Adventures

Dan Irby’s Mangrove Adventure

Nothing like a Daintree River cruise in the magical late afternoon. Start your mangrove adventure from the north side of the Daintree River near the ferry landing.

The Daintree River Ferry

The Daintree River is lined with lush rainforest comprising palms, ferns, giant trees and vines. The rainforest-clad Alexandra Range runs along the north bank of the river and includes majestic Thornton Peak.

But, notice the flood damage along the banks of the river. January, 2019 saw much rain and flooding. The Daintree River Ferry stopped running twice due to flooding.

Dusk is when the spectacled flying foxes leave their daytime camps and travel through the rainforest to feed. They can travel as much as 50km throughout the night to find enough fruit. Seeds are thus dispersed to keep the rainforest healthy. The evening flyover is a magnificent sight. The flying foxes dip into the river and then suck the water from their fur.

As darkness falls, it is time to get out the spotlight and look for crocs. Their eyes glow red in the spotlight. Very relaxing watching a croc glide through the water on a velvety tropical evening.
