Litoria gracilenta |
Any excuse to make a racket. The graceful tree frogs set up a loud chorus when it rains. Litoria gracilenta easily out outcompete the other frogs in their noise making once they get going. They are easily identified by the yellow stripe that runs from their nostrils and over their eyes.

Harvesting small but very sweet and juicy pineapples. They are better ripened on the plant but other rainforest dwellers also like pineapples so some had been nibbled. Pineapples are non climacteric fruit which means that the starches don’t continue to be converted into sugars after picking. Thus they may soften but will not become sweeter.

There was an explosion of peppermint stick insects in the northern parts of the Daintree. They were very active on Madja Boardwalk and all but stripped the Pandanus tectorius on Coconut Beach. The male is smaller than the female and often just sits on the female. When threatened, they spray a milky substance from behind their head. It is an irritant and smells like peppermint.

Cafe Thornton Beach Cafe offers relaxed dining overlooking Struck Island on Thornton Beach. The fish (mackerel) and chips are excellent.

January means misty mornings. Mist gathers in all of the low areas and over the Daintree River. It is quite magical driving through the misty rainforest.

I had couple of cassowary sightings this month. One was strutting across Cape Trib Road, another was having a go at some remnant road kill and a father and his two stripeys were wandering around the car park at Kulki. Cassowaries are frugivores (fruit eaters) but will scavenge dead animals. Cassowaries eat seeds whole and cassowary poo has a wide variety of seeds in their own fertiliser. Stripey poo has much smaller seeds.
