Daintree Mangroves - Rhizophora stylosa

Rhizophora stylosa on Cape Tribulation Beach

Spotted mangrove on Cape Kimberley Beach

Rhizophora stylosa is called a red mangrove due to the colour of its rough bark or a spotted mangrove due to the spots on the underside of its leaves. These spots excrete excess salt so the underside of the leaves taste very salty.

These mangroves grow right on the beach at Cape Tribulation and Kimberley. They have stilt roots and also develop aerial roots. The seeds germinate on the trees and produce long propagules which eventually fall off and disperse.
