Rex Lookout on a Blue Day |
The Great Barrier Reef Drive extends from Smithfield just north of Cairns City to Cape Tribulation, a distance of 140km. The distance to the Daintree River is around 90km and it takes just over an hour to drive; that is if you don’t stop to look at the many beautiful scenes along the way. Double Island lies to the south of Rex Lookout.
The Rex Lookout is a must stop. The view is always different as the Coral Sea has a huge colour palette and the colour of the sky ranges from a deep blue to dark grey depending on the weather conditions. The clouds come in many formations and play on both the water and the rainforest-clad hills casting myriad and ever-changing shadows. The diversity of the plants on the hills is amazing and there are flowering trees for every season. When there is wind, the human flyers join the oft-seen raptors gliding on the air currents.
In July, wonga wonga vine (Pandorea pandorana) coats the trees on the hillside and spills over onto the grassy area. It is a good plant for butterflies.

At nearby a Wangetti, there are the balancing rocks which are stacked up by the tourists to be knocked down by the ocean.
