Peppermint stick insects (Megacrania batesii) are only found in a couple of patches in the Wet Tropics. They live on a certain screw pine (Pandanus tectorius) and if disturbed, they spray a peppermint-smelling liquid. The female is bigger than the male and both sexes have wings but only the male flies.
They really don’t move much. If you can’t find one (or more) in the wild, then visit Daintree Entomological Museum to see peppermint stick insects as well as an extensive and eclectic collection of local and world butterflies, moths and beetles. Museum currently closed (June2022).
