Due to coronavirus, we were in lockdown for the month of April. We were allowed to shop for essentials and go out for daily exercise but had to be careful with hygiene, especially hand sanitation and social distancing (1.5m apart) when in the supermarket. This was well organised in the Douglas Shire Council area so not too much of an imposition for one who has recently retired.
The tourists disappeared and restaurants and pubs closed down except for limited take-away menus but the beaches were largely deserted so Daintree Dazzle dog and I were able to continue our beach walks, often the only walkers on the beach.

Staying close to home meant looking more closely at my immediate environment. My insect cohabiters included the large male rhinoceros beetle, busy green ants, the loud buzzing native blue-banded bee and a St Andrews Cross spider.

The April flowers included the native red hibiscus, white cat’s whiskers, Turnera subulata - the politician’s flower and the gloriously perfumed Ylang Ylang.
